The woods were evil, that was well known, and the little river Teithiwr was often taken as proof of it. It sprang up in the mountains, bouncing and gurgled happily over patchwork gravel beds, before descending into the woods in a series of small waterfalls. On the other side, however, several miles down the valley, it came out sluggish and stained and choked with dead leaves.

Why the woods should be evil, no-one was quite sure, as it came neither from the earth, nor from the trees
